In just 7 years from 1938 to 1945 every aspect of life of Jurby had been transformed by the arrival of the RAF. The exhibition gives snapshots of that year including the miraculous escape of the crew of a Sunderland flying boat which crash-landed just moments before it blew up.

As well as the obvious heroes, the pilot and navigator of the Sunderland whose actions saved 11 lives, there are the local heroes and heroines such as Vicar Gamble who worked tirelessly for the community throughout the war years.
Then there is the amazing Nurse Cleator, working for the Northern District Nursing Association, who made nearly 4,000 home visits a year, travelling over 11,000 miles around the North of the Island.
There are photos and stories of the farmers, the Land Army girls and those who gave up most
of their homes to billet the RAF families.
There is the story of the ‘Spy at Ballamoar’ who claimed to have a machine that could read Hitler’s brainwaves.
Some other snapshots are of the visit of the King and Queen to inspect RAF personnel before presiding over Tynwald for the first time, and of internee Gerhard Bersu’s excavation of a Viking burial mound.
As well as the booklet ‘It’s Better to be Born Lucky than Rich’, the dramatic account of the Sunderland crash told by the navigator, George Washington, there are other books on sale and a wonderful selection of homemade preserves.
