CIRCA Isle of Man awarded £13k grant for Shopmobility scheme

Manx Lottery Trust backs 'Buddies' initiative

CIRCA Isle of Man has received a £13,000 grant from the Manx Lottery Trust to fund the development of a new Shopmobility 'Buddy' Pilot Scheme.

The aim of the initiative is to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of public spaces for individuals with mobility challenges.

The pilot scheme will see trained volunteers, or 'Buddies', accompany Shopmobility service users, offering companionship and assistance as needed.

The role of the 'Buddy' is to be supportive and reassuring, rather than functioning as an attendant. The initiative, MLT says, aims to 'promote an ethos of inclusion, ensuring that compromised mobility does not compromise life and that everyone has equal access to public spaces.'

CIRCA Isle of Man Chairman Martin Barnett says: 'We are incredibly thankful to Manx Lottery Trust for their generous support. This funding is instrumental in launching our 'Buddy' Pilot Scheme, which will provide invaluable companionship and assistance to those using Shopmobility services. The ability to navigate public spaces with confidence and support is essential, and we are excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our community.'

Manx Lottery Trust Chairman Stephen Turner says: 'We are proud to support CIRCA Isle of Man in their efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusion through the scheme. Their dedication to improving the quality of life for individuals with mobility challenges is truly commendable. We wish them every success with this innovative project and look forward to seeing the positive changes it will bring.'

Community Awards is a grants programme which helps to improve communities and the lives of people most in need, for amounts between £2,501 and £50,000.
