Efforts to try and overcome a high failure rate of trees planted in the People’s Wood appear to be working, with the trees currently on site showing 'good growth'.
More than 70,000 broadleaf trees were planted at the site from February 2021, including Aspen, Willow, Sycamore and Oak, but 50 per cent didn't grow.
Jason Bolt is the Head of Forestry with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.
He admits the original trees weren't planted at the right time, but says their lack of success was due to a number of factors:
