Tynwald member says quote doesn't represent her views
A Tynwald member insists a quote used as a headline on the front page of one of the Island's newspapers doesn't represent her views, and was taken out of context.
The Manx Independent used the headline 'Be kinder to abusers', attributing the words to Kerry Sharpe MLC after the Sexual Offences Bill progressed through the Legislative Council last week.
Mrs Sharpe has been on the receiving end of online comments, both attacking and defending her views on granting anonymity to those accused of sexual offences.
However, she says she was simply trying to examine the issue from both sides:
In response, Isle of Man Newspapers editor Richard Butt told Manx Radio: "Our headline included a subhead, which says 'MLC ponders a new approach'. It did not say she advocated it. I think it's clear from that that she was putting a counter argument. That put it in context.
"Read in collaboration with the story, it is quite clearly a good accurate report, which shows that Mrs Sharpe understands the issue has many different aspects and I welcome her intelligent approach to it."
