Claims made by an MHK this week have been disputed by a leading academic.
Dr Angus Bancroft from the University of Edinburgh has studied and published a multitude of papers on the subject, and authored the book ‘Drugs, Intoxication and Society’.
Last month, Chief Minister Allan Bell said he believed the old-style war on drugs had "failed miserably".
It followed the visit to the Island of Professor David Nutt, the UK government's former advisor on drugs policy, who suggested the Isle of Man should open cannabis coffee shops.
The issue was raised in Keys this week by Ramsey MHK Leonard Singer who said he'd seen a report suggesting cannabis is a "gateway drug"
However, Dr Bancroft doesn't agree
