One in five drinking harmful amounts
Newly-released statistics concerning alcohol consumption on the Isle of Man are not surprising.
That's the view of Dr Kirsten Wafer, Consultant Psychiatrist for the Drug and Alcohol Team.
This week's Public Health Report (Tues 24th) highlighted that some 13,500 adults are drinking at levels that may harm their health, which amounts to around one in five of the adult population.
And although 14 per cent of adults say they never drink alcohol, the number of adults that can be described as 'binge drinkers' is as high as eight per cent.
Whilst the numbers are in line with the England average, Dr Wafer suggests one reason why alcohol problems could be especially prevalent here:
