An animal rescuer on the Isle of Man says she's saddened by the news that an XL Bully had to be put down due to a ban against the breed

In 2023, Tynwald followed the UK's introduction of a licensing system on a ban on breeding and rehoming them in the hope of stopping the Isle of Man from becoming an XL Bully 'sanctuary'.

Charlie was seized under the Customs and Excise Management Act 1986; he was then forfeited to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

Alongside XL Bully-type dogs, the following breeds or types remain subject to a strict import ban here:

  • Pit Bull Terrier type
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro

Anita Williams, the founder of Animals in Distress Isle of Man - who campaigned against the law coming into force - reacted to the news:

The ManxSPCA has also commented on the ruling, calling it 'a tragic loss' and 'a vital lesson'.

In a statement posted on social media, the charity says it's 'deeply saddened' after Charlie came into its care in November last year.

Throughout his time there, the team say he showed a 'gentle and loving nature' despite the uncertainty of his future.
