In taking the red points jersey in the Giro D'Italia, after battling through a very tough last week, Mark, from Laxey, took the final sprint to take the red jersey ahead of the race general classification winner, Vincenzo Nibali.
Mark was expected to pull out of the event before the end, to rest for the Tour de France but proved strong enough to become only one of a handful of men who have won the points jersey in the three great tours in Italy, Spain and France.
Cavendish won both intermediate sprints on the flat 197km stage to overhaul an 11-point deficit on Nibali before edging the sprint finish.
