Currently only married couples or those in civil partnerships qualify
An MHK says the Island's approach to joint income tax assessments 'doesn't seem fair'.
Currently only married couples or those in civil partnerships qualify, and those living together with a child.
Ramsey member Lawrie Hooper will put forward a motion to Tynwald this month proposing that joint income tax treatment should be extended to cohabiting couples, regardless of whether they have children:
In response, Treasury Minister Chris Thomas MHK says: “Tynwald will debate Mr Hooper’s motion later this month and I will reserve remarks until then. However, it is disappointing that such a substantial change is proposed when there are so many other social, economic and public finance challenges around us.”
This month's Tynwald sitting gets underway on 21 April.
