DEFA warns against swimming in discoloured patches caused by marine plankton
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is advising people to avoid swimming in orange coloured sea-water.
The discolouration is caused by marine plankton called Noctiluca scintillans found by Manx coastlines during the summer months.
While not considered harmful to humans, DEFA warns dense patches can cause 'minor skin irritation or respiratory discomfort for sensitive individuals.'
Similar blooms have been recorded in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024.
