Blind podcaster aims to remove stigma around disabilities

Evie Roberts started 'Talking in the Dark' in June 2023

A blind teenager from the Isle of Man says she’s hoping to break barriers and challenge stigmas and stereotypes through her podcast.

Evie Roberts hosts ‘Talking in the Dark’ from a studio at Ballakermeen High School.

The 14-year-old was born with a condition called bilateral anophthalmia - which means her eyes didn't develop - but hasn’t let that stop her from following her dreams.

Evie told Manx Radio she was inspired to start the podcast by her teacher Stephen Craige.

"He always complemented me on my voice and said he'd like me to think about a podcast and finally I gave in," she added.

Mr Craige constructed a soundproof recording studio in one of the drama classes at the school so that Evie can conduct her interviews privately.

She’s already interviewed some big names including Nile Rogers, Baroness Tani Grey Thompson and Stephen Fry and has Taylor Swift on her wish list:

Evie says she'd like to continue for as long as she can and would like a career in podcasting or radio in the future.

You can listen to Evie's full interview in this episode of NEWSCAST.
