An Island charity says it’s dismayed by new charges for disposing of waste at the Eastern Civic Amenity Site.
Hospice Care is one of a number of good causes that disposes of house clearance remnants at the site after sorting through donations.
But the joint committee which runs the Middle River site in Douglas says it’s unfair for ratepayers in six local authorities to subsidise the good causes.
It’s started charging charities – something Hospice says was done without any discussion.
In a statement, Hospice Shops says it very much values donations from the Manx public and would find the charges costly and prohibitive.
The organisation says it hasn’t had any opportunity to discuss the issue with the committee or any of the six local authorities – Lonan, Santon, Douglas, Onchan, Braddan and Laxey.
It says it understands the need to save money in the Island’s current financial circumstances but acknowledges the charities involved are raising money for very important and worthwhile causes.
The issue is set to go before Douglas Council when it sits tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon.
