Chief Minister candidates take questions from MHKs

MHK Kirrie Jenkins and MHK Chris Thomas

Kirrie Jenkins and Chris Thomas are vying to replace Alfred Cannan

Kirrie Jenkins and Chris Thomas have outlined their priorities for the Island's next government at a hustings for the role of Chief Minister.

Both candidates said government needed to act quickly on issues affecting residents and businesses, including housing, public services and the economy.

They differed on how priorities should be set while Mrs Jenkins advocated a more collegiate approach, with members agreeing priorities together after listening to evidence and different sectors.

Mr Thomas pointed to the timetables and proposals in his policy statement, saying the new administration should turn the electorate’s call for change into action.

On housing, Mrs Jenkins called for a clearer definition of affordability and said government should examine empty properties, second homes and rising land costs.

Mr Thomas proposed bringing a motion to Tynwald to clarify the housing target, funding and delivery, and said government should join up work across departments.

The candidates also discussed public-sector staffing. Ms Jenkins supported an evidence-based pause on new posts, while Mr Thomas called for recruitment controls, a workforce plan and action to remove unnecessary duplication.

On financial regulation, Ms Jenkins said she would review the Financial Services Authority and Mr Thomas argued that reducing regulatory friction should be the priority, rather than introducing fundamental new legislation.

Other topics have included young people’s career opportunities, child poverty, border policy, energy targets, health prevention, the Steam Packet and the future of the Manx Development Corporation.

You can hear from both candidates in Manx Radio's Chief Minister debate live from 6pm tonight or watch on manxradio.com, Facebook, YouTube or your Smart TV from 6pm.
