Building subject to demolition order as part of housing development

Castletown Commissioners say the authority wants to see a ‘professional assessment’ on the importance of Westhill House.

The building, on the former Buchan School site, is set to be demolished to make way as part of a new housing development.

The local authority says it supports the deferment of any final decision relating to the planning application until a more detailed review has been completed.

Castletown Heritage has previously called for the historic property to be saved from demolition saying it’s contrary to the Isle of Man Strategic Plan.

It wanted people to write to Planning to highlight their objections to the loss of the building.

Castletown Commissioners say they are not opposed to the redevelopment proposals of the site on Arbory Road.

The authority is now calling for a ‘detailed assessment’ from the Planning Directorate.

This, it says, would ‘confirm or otherwise’ the historic importance and special interest of Westhill House to the Island.
