Issues surrounding Manx workers also discussed at Government Conference
The Minister for Home Affairs says government will continue to maintain security when it comes to the Island's borders.
During yesterday's (24 September) Government Conference issues around border measures and controlled inward migration were discussed.
Government restated its commitment to safeguarding borders and minimising abuse of the system.
Jane Poole-Wilson adds they will also continually look to maintain the integrity of the common travel areas:
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Cabinet Office David Ashford says government will still prioritise Manx workers, while responding to the needs of employers.
Those coming to the Isle of Man to work will be welcomed but will still require a work permit 'when employers cannot find the skills they need on-Island':
The following principles were set out in the Council of Ministers Update Report on Inward Migration received by Tynwald in July:
- The Government will continue to pursue appropriate inward migration measures to meet the Island’s needs, alongside investment in upskilling residents and supporting more people into work
- In doing so, the Government will:
- Maintain security of the Island and the integrity of the Common Travel Area as a top priority, continuing to adapt in response to evolving risks and seeking to minimise abuse of the system
- Prioritise Isle of Man workers
- Respond to the needs of employers where skills cannot be found on Island
- Welcome those coming to the Isle of Man to work through the work permit system and immigration visa routes, when employers cannot find the skills they need on-Island.
