Committal for Costa manager who stole £17k from tills

30-year-old warned custody could be an option at sentencing

A Ramsey man has admitted stealing £17,470 from the cafe he was employed to manage.

John David Gelling, of North Shore Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse today (30 April) where he admitted the theft.

The court was told he stole the money between January last year and 28 February this year, when he handed himself in to police.

He admitted pocketing the cash in CCTV blind spots within the store on Parliament Street in Ramsey.

The 30-year-old would delay deposits into business accounts until the store earned enough to cover the losses.

The prosecutor told the court Gelling 'abused his position' as a manager, and there was a level of 'sophistication' involved.

A Social Enquiry Report has been requested before he is committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery on 17 May; he’s been bailed until that date.
