Community service for man who punched bouncer in groin

Advocate describes incident as 'a terrible night out'

A Douglas man has been ordered to carry out unpaid work for the good of the community after punching a bouncer in the groin.

Martin John Lewis Cairney, of Cronk Y Berry View, assaulted the man during a festive night out with work colleagues on 19 November last year.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse the 45-year-old’s advocate described Cairney's actions at Jaks Bar and Smokehouse as ‘something of a petulant strike’ after his client had been asked to leave.

The security worker was not injured during the assault.

The advocate told the court the consequences of the incident had been ‘quite catastrophic’ for Cairney - with a loss of liberty, employment and relationship as a result.

“It was a terrible night out,” he told the court: “Mr Cairney accepts he has no one else to blame.”

Ordering him to do 180 hours of community service High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Cairney to pay £500 in compensation and £300 in prosecution costs.
