A few simple steps can make a big difference

Now that the clocks have changed, and the nights are drawing-in earlier, the Isle of Man Constabulary has a simple message - make sure you're bright at night!

The Road Safety Team has put together some simple advice to help pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers stay safe during the darker days and nights.

They say whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving, a few simple steps can make a big difference.

We're being encouraged to check our lights, wear bright or reflective clothing, and stay alert on the roads.

Sergeant Lee Wright is from the Isle of Man Constabulary's Roads Policing Unit - he told Siobhán Fletcher more:

Meanwhile, the Constabulary has also launched its annual winter vehicle checks and will be performing increased roadside stops over the coming weeks.

Operation Uplift began on Monday 27 October, and will run through until Sunday 16 November.

Over the next three weeks, officers from across the force will be performing roadside checks and random stops with partner agencies to examine vehicles for roadworthiness.

They'll be checking against their POWDERS checklist:
  • P - Petrol (fuel): Ensure you have enough petrol, diesel or electric for your journey. This will help you to avoid breaking down and potentially putting yourself and others at risk.
  • O - Oil: Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. Maintaining the correct oil level is essential to prevent your engine from seizing up and breaking down.
  • W - Water: Check coolant/antifreeze levels and always keep your screen wash topped up so you can clear any debris or dirt off your windscreen.
  • D - Damage: Inspect the vehicle for any new damage, including lights, mirrors, and the windscreen.
  • E - Electrics: Check that all lights (headlights, brake lights, and indicators) are working correctly; they are not only essential for you, they are also essential for other drivers to understand how you are driving your vehicle and how you intend to manoeuvre.
  • R - Rubber: Examine the tires for tread depth, pressure, and damage. Also, check the condition of wiper blades.
  • S - Self: Make sure you are fit to drive, not tired, and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Ensure all documents are in order so that you and the vehicle are road legal; driving licence, insurance, tax, registration etc.
