Former minister says legislation is needed to ensure authorities provide a certain standard of services
The former infrastructure minister believes a controversial clause in proposed new local government legislation could help ensure local authorities are providing a certain standard of services.
Using the example of the civic amenity sites while speaking to Manx Radio, Michelle Haywood highlighted how services can vary widely throughout the Island.
Providing reuse facilities at the civic amenity sites is not currently a statutory requirement, meaning some areas have a greater range of options than others.
Local authorities have expressed concern about clause five, which would give the Department of Infrastructure the power to impose functions on local boards.
But Dr Haywood says it's important residents' expectations are met:
