DoI will take over Chester St and Drumgold St
Two of Douglas Council's major car parks will be handed over to the government this month in an effort to save money.
From Friday 14 August, both Chester Street and Drumgold Street will be operated by the Department of Infrastructure.
Douglas Council, which pays £1.3 million a year to the DoI for the two sites, said it had no other choice but to give up the 'financially unsustainable' car parks .
It's understood the cost of managing them was putting 'considerable pressure' on the council’s finances.
Council leader David Christian says lockdown also led to the 'substantial loss of car park income' adding that it 'does not have the resources' to oversee them any longer.
