Devon Watson questions why government funds are available to private developers but not local authorities

The leader of Douglas City Council has hit out at the lack of support available to local authorities wanting to build on brownfield sites.

Devon Watson says private companies can access a government scheme to help them bring previously occupied sites back into use.

He believes if similar support was offered to local government, there'd be no shortage of social housing on the Island.

A Public Sector Housing policy is due to be considered in the July sitting of Tynwald which will look to improve access to social housing, while government has committed to deliver 1,000 new affordable homes in the next 10 years.

Councillor Watson told Phil Gawne about the benefits building on brownfield sites could bring to tenants in public sector housing:

Manx Radio has contacted the Department of Infrastructure for response.
