29-year-old admits being drunk and disorderly

A drunk Ramsey man who demanded a lift home from police got a ride to a cell instead.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jason Liam Christian, of Bircham Avenue Close, appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

He admitted a single charge of being drunk and disorderly, on 25 September, in Market Square.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing police on patrol in a van had to stop suddenly when Christian stepped out from the kerb.

He demanded a lift from officers and when they refused he began trying to get in, rattling door handles until he was arrested.

Representing himself Christian admitted the offence but told the court he wasn't guilty – he later entered an unequivocal guilty plea.

Magistrates fined him £250 and ordered him to pay £125 towards prosecution costs or serve 30 days in prison in default.

When unemployed Christian asked if he could choose the prison term instead of the fine magistrates told him "This isn’t a game show".
