'Manx Missile' made history to win 2022 event
Mark Cavendish returns to action today hoping to defend his crown in the Milano-Torino race in Italy.
The Manx Missile won the event last year for his former team, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, in a time of four hours, 31 minutes 22 seconds.
In doing so he became the first ever British rider to take victory in the historic event over its 103 editions up until that point.
The one-day Milano-Torino contest is considered the oldest race in the world, having first been held in 1876.
This year Cavendish and his Astana Qazaqstan squad will compete against 16 other teams to navigate a largely-flat 192km route starting at Rho and finishing in Orbassano.
The race is due to get underway at approximately 11.45am local time.
