David Ashford elected as Speaker of the House of Keys

The Douglas North MHK was the only person nominated for the role

Douglas North MHK David Ashford has been elected as the new Speaker of the House of Keys.

He was the only member nominated this afternoon.

Mr Ashford's name was put forward by Onchan MHK Rob Callister who said: "At the beginning of the new parliamentary term, and with several new elected members taking their seats today, the House would benefit greatly from a Speaker who combines experience and through a solid understanding of our traditions, our procedures and the constitutional responsibilities."

Middle MHK and Justice and Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole-Wilson seconded Mr Ashford's nomination.

Speaking to members after his election, Mr Ashford said: "Thank you again for the trust that you've placed in me.

"I will do my very best to justify it, to uphold the traditions and independence of this House and to serve you all fairly."

Henthorn elected Deputy - Cannan becomes Interim Cabinet Office Minister 

Meanwhile, newly-elected Garff MHK Richard Henthorn has been elected as Deputy Speaker.

With Mr Ashford now serving as Speaker, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan is to serve as interim Minister for the Cabinet Office.

Mr Cannan says: "In line with the constitutional convention that the Speaker acts impartially and separately from the executive, Mr Ashford has tendered his resignation as Minister for the Cabinet Office, which I have accepted.

"With a new administration forming in the coming weeks, I have taken the decision to serve as Minister for the Cabinet Office on an interim basis.

"I offer my sincere congratulations to Mr Ashford on his election as Speaker and thank him for the contribution he has made during his time as Minister for the Cabinet Office."

The House's previous speaker, Juan Watterson, was elected to the role of President of Tynwald in July.
