Scott Gallacher took up the role in August 2023
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture's chief officer is to leave his post this summer.
A statement from the department says Scott Gallacher has decided to return to the southern hemisphere to be closer to family.
The department says Mr Gallacher, who took up the role in August 2023, has led DEFA through a period of positive change and organisational development.
The recruitment process to find his replacement will open shortly.
