
An MHK has called on the Manx government to demand extended rights from the UK to exploit seas around the Island.
Peter Karran tabled a motion in Tynwald aimed at establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone or EEZ.
He argued the Manx government should press for the status on the basis the UK is obliged under a United Nations charter, to promote the interests of the Isle of Man.
EEZs allow countries greater rights to exploit mineral and fishing resources and benefit from oil and gas developments.
Mr Karran told Tynwald there are strong precedents:
The motion was heavily defeated after a debate in which Chief Minister Allan Bell said the idea was a non-starter.
Mr Bell said he'd explained to Mr Karran why an EEZ could not be created around the Isle of Man several times in the past.
But he offered to repeat the advice to Tywnald:
