DESC faces scrutiny over changes to school swimming lessons

Minister says move will save approximately £80,000

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture is under scrutiny over changes to schools’ swimming timetables.

From September 2025, 22 schools will offer pupils 18 lessons of 45 minutes, replacing 26 shorter sessions, meaning children will spend 30 minutes more in the pool annually.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew Jason Moorhouse asked if this was simply another attempt to cut costs.

Minister Daphne Caine says the move will save approximately £80,000:

Government says the changes aim to ensure all children become confident swimmers before leaving primary school.
