A motion to bring the Disability Discrimination Act of 2006 into force as soon as possible was defeated in Tynwald yesterday.
It had been brought by South Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft, who was concerned that seven years after the Act received royal assent, it still hadn't been implemented.
She wanted to see a timetable for implementation published by the Department of Social Care by this June
However, the court agreed to an amendment put forward by Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw to approve a proactive programme to bring the act in progressively, with an opportunity for the court to scrutinise progress at the end of the year.
He suggested that this was preferable to agreeing on an arbitrary date for the full implementation of the Act.
