Minister says stone isn't on land owned by his department
The infrastructure minister says his department isn't responsible for maintaining the Solway Harvester Memorial Stone on Douglas Head.
Tim Crookall confirmed in response to a Tynwald written question from Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh that the Solway Harvester Trust is responsible for its ongoing maintenance, and the stone sits on land that doesn't fall within the department's assets.
The stone was presented to the Isle of Man by the Galloway communities from which the crew originated as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic sinking of the Solway Harvester in January 2000.
Minister Crookall explained that ownership and management arrangements on Douglas Head are complex, and that Central Registry has confirmed the area the memorial sits on is unregistered land.
However, he says he recognises the deep importance it holds for families affected, and that the department would be willing to assist by facilitating engagement between interested parties to help "ensure the memorial continues to be treated with the respect it deserves."
