
The Island's food safety experts will this week highlight concerns Island residents are putting their health at risk when cooking at home.
A recent survey by the Food Standards Agency has revealed poor kitchen hygiene across the UK.
The findings have been revealed at the start of Food Safety Week.
In the North West of England, 82 per cent of people admitted to bad habits while cooking at home; 22 per cent revealed they didn't wash their hands properly before preparing food, while 39 per cent of people said they would eat food after its 'use by' date.
Despite these figures, only six per cent of people believed they had ever caused food poisoning.
Food Safety Week in the Island and UK runs from today until June 16.
During that time, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture will mount a display in the Sea Terminal where members of the public can complete a 'Kitchen Check'.
The Department hopes the hands-on audit will encourage people to think about kitchen hygiene at home and discourage them from 'gambling with their guts'.
