Council gives event the go ahead after doubts over economic benefit
Douglas Carnival is set to return in July after a three year absence due to Covid-19 and the ongoing promenade works.
Douglas Council has proposed to allocate £20,000 of it's reserves to stage the event earmarked for 23 July - details around this will be discussed at next week's council meeting, where the event will be put forward for approval.
The return of the carnival was in doubt earlier this year after a report suggested the 2019 event showed little evidence of economic benefit to the town centre.
However the Council says the Carnival has proved popular attracting thousands of participants and spectators to the capital since being relaunched in 2014.
Both the Council’s Executive Committee and local authority officers believe the carnival in a new format will be a worthwhile community event.
