Douglas Corporation is going to fit all their domestic wheelie bins with a microchip.
It's part of a maintenance programme as many bins are significantly beyond their life span of 10 years.
Those that are beyond repair will be replaced.
Councillor Ritchie McNicholl says microchipping isn't about keeping tabs on what people are throwing out, rather to review and develop the collection service.
The information will also be used to identify who owns the bins, reducing time spent trying to find ones which have been lost or stolen.
They will be chipped over a six-month period.
