22-year-old also spat at cell door claiming he had Covid
A Douglas man who bit and kicked police officers, after being arrested on New Year’s Eve, has been handed a 118 day prison sentence.
22-year-old Leroy Steven McHarrie, of Mona Drive, has already served the time whilst on remand at the Isle of Man Prison and has now been released.
But the Deemster sentencing him at Douglas Courthouse last week had a message: “Please go away and don’t come back to court.”
The court heard McHarrie had lashed out at two officers at Police Headquarters in the early hours of New Year’s Day – kicking one and biting the hand of another which drew blood.
He then spat at the cell door claiming he had Covid.
Neither officer was seriously injured.
Addressing McHarrie in court Deemster Richmond told him: “At 22 your life does not seem to be going anywhere.
“It’s really a matter for you if you’re going to spend your life being a regular in these courts.”
Confirming with McHarrie that he would call 999 if his family were in trouble Deemster Richmond added: “The price we pay for needing the police is respecting the police.
“They must be supported when they’re doing their job properly.”
No evidence was offered in relation to other charges of affray, criminal damage and possessing an imitation firearm and they were dismissed.
