Man allegedly obstructed police while possessing cocaine

A Union Mills man alleged to have struggled with a police officer trying to search him for drugs will appear in court again in September.

27-year-old Darren James O’Hare of Close Y Lhergy appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

He pleaded not guilty to obstructing a drugs search and possessing cocaine with intent to supply the class A drug on 31 May.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon said police had received a tip-off Mr O’Hare was acting suspiciously in Douglas betting shop and was thought to have been dealing drugs.

Miss Cubbon told the hearing police searched for Mr O’Hare and eventually found him near Isle of Man Bank on Strand Street shortly after 1pm.

But she added when police tried to detain him and carry out a search, he tried to break free and run off down Regent Street, only to be tackled to the ground and arrested.

It’s alleged during the incident he tried to dump a clear bag of cocaine weighing around three-quarters of a gramme with a street value of £100.

Mr O’Hare was granted bail and will appear again for a pre-trial review on 24 September.
