Dyslexia support 'has not progressed in over a decade'

MHK seeks backing for committee following Tynwald Day petition

Tynwald is being asked to consider establishing a Select Committee to investigate the state of support for neurodiverse conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia.

The proposal follows a petition submitted in St John's in July by the Dyslexia Advocacy Group, which is calling for improved training and resources to enhance the identification and support.

Onchan MHK Rob Callister, who is leading the call, wants the Committee to review existing provisions and assess whether they comply with the Equality Act 2017.

If approved, the Select Committee would comprise three politicians, with members from the Department of Education, Sport and Culture or Treasury ineligible to participate.

A report would be due by the end of April 2025.

Mr Callister argues that despite promises from successive education ministers, support has not progressed in over a decade:

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture has previously said it is "committed to ensuring all pupils receive appropriate support to access learning opportunities in school."

Minister Daphne Caine spoke in favour of the petition, and committed to voting in favour of the motion.

Tynwald voted in favour and selected a committee consisting of:

  • Onchan MHK Rob Callister
  • Douglas Central MHK Ann Corlett
  • MLC Dawn Kinnish
