No one hurt in incident which saw main road shut for several hours

Emergency services have confirmed no one was hurt following a fire on Lezayre Road in Ramsey this morning (13 January).

A section of the road was closed for over two hours whilst the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service dealt with the incident.

At 9.52am the Emergency Services Joint Control Room dispatched crews from Ramsey and Laxey to the property.

On arrival crews were met with a 'well-established fire producing lots of thick smoke' and the incident commander made a decision to attack the fire with a hose reel and 45mm jet from the outside.

Two firefighters in breathing apparatus equipment were then sent into the property with a hose reel.

A further four firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus equipment, also entered to ensure the fire was brought under control and to stop further fire spread.

After approximately 20 minutes the fire was brought under control, and extinguished, with crews staying in attendance for approximately two hours 'damping down hot spots to prevent any further ignition'.

The road was closed throughout the incident, with buses diverted.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has thanked the police and the public for their assistance, patience and understanding.

It says whilst no one was hurt 'the effects of fire can be devastating'.

It's encouraging homeowners to undertake the online home fire safety check which can help you to ensure your home is safe from fire.
