The Island’s health service is be receive an independent external audit in a bid to restore public confidence.
After an emotive and at times spiky three hour debate, Tynwald last night (Tuesday) backed an amendment from the Health Minister David Anderson.
But only after many politicians claimed the department had been too slow to react and lent their support to a motion from South Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft who called for an external audit of Noble’s Hospital following serious concerns about patient safety – raised by both the public and 10 senior clinicians.
Amid claims that staff were demoralised and frightened to speak out, figures within the health department acknowledged problems needed addressing.
North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson says while the review is totally justified, it should not detract from the work of staff who may feel undermined by the ongoing criticism.
