Police concerned about underreporting of incidents each year
Plans are underway to try and strengthen the law on the Isle of Man to bring in stronger penalties for dog owners whose animals are caught worrying livestock.
The Manx National Farmers’ Union says it’s hopeful the Island’s legislation can be changed to better protect sheep and cattle.
The lambing season can be problematic for Manx farmers who also have to be on their guard from unwanted canine intruders.
Last month farmer Angela Kelly took to social media to share graphic images of the aftermath of a dog entering one of her fields in Ballaugh:
Angela’s plea for dog owners to take more responsibility for their pets is echoed by the Manx National Farmers’ Union.
Sarah Comish is the General Secretary and says until the legislation can be changed education is key:
Ultimately the responsibility for keeping a dog off farm land, and away from livestock, falls to the owner.
