Final debate on Assisted Dying Bill in House of Keys

UK's House of Lords due to begin similar discussion

The House of Keys will have one final opportunity to discuss the Assisted Dying Bill as it reaches its third reading following weeks of clause-by-clause debate.

While the Island considers this measure, the House of Lords across the water is also preparing to examine the issue.

Lord Falconer’s assisted dying proposals are expected to come before Peers on Friday.

Last year, he and Baroness Meacher, who has previously attempted to introduce assisted dying legislation, briefed Tynwald members on the Bill.

The new Labour government supports the Falconer Bill and has a full term to seek approval in the Commons.

Speaking to the BBC, Lord Falconer believes the time has come for this legislation:

On the Island, MHKs are expected to complete the third reading of the Private Members' Bill in today’s sitting.

Before that, a 21-question paper will address topics ranging from Isle of Man Post Office deliveries and literacy policy to regulations on the burial of deceased livestock.

Manx Care will be under scrutiny as the health and social care minister will reveal forecast overspend for the current financial year.

Justice and Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole-Wilson will be asked about actions being taken to tackle drug dealing in housing estates.

Arbory, Castletown, and Malew’s Jason Moorhouse will pose seven questions, including inquiries about the number of planned wind turbines, their height, and expected power generation levels.

Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson, the mover of the Assisted Dying Bill, will also face questions about how many public meetings on the topic he has arranged and attended.
