DoI says there are 'varying reasons' for the use of deputy clerks

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that four local authorities are currently operating with temporary clerks.

It says Ramsey, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Castletown Commissioners are, as of the beginning of February 2026, using deputies for 'varying reasons'.

The information was provided in response to a written question from Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper who also asked what role the department has in providing governance or oversight to local authorities.

The DoI confirmed that under the Local Government Act every appointment by a local authority is subject to its approval.

The written question can be found here.
