CLAJ to present findings to Tynwald next month
A Tynwald committee set up to examine the ministerial system says a future constitutional committee must decide if changes are necessary.
After hearing from four chief ministers the Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Justice Committee will present its findings to Tynwald next month.
The committee wanted to answer the following questions:
- What were the original aims of the ministerial system of government?
- Did changing to a ministerial system of government feel at the time like an improvement on the system it replaced?
- Looking back over all the time the system has been in place, has it worked? If not, why not?
- Can the ministerial system of government be improved? If so, how?
Ultimately it said it wished to understand the effectiveness of the change over from a board system of governance in 1986 to a ministerial system of government which remains in place today.
The committee was presided over by MLC Tanya August-Phillips and MHKs Lawrie Hooper and Stu Peters.
