The former Rushen MHK had tried his hand in the neighbouring constituency after boundaries were re-drawn, but was no longer in his heartland.
Graham Cregeen was returned but it was challenger Jason Moorhouse, a teacher at Castle Rushen High School who topped the poll.
Mr Gawne said the result spelled the end of his political career, but didn't see departmental woes over the horse trams and Douglas promenade as a poisoned chalice:
