Government invests in new buses as part of fleet upgrade

Hybrid and low-emission models part of drive to cut fleet carbon footprint

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed it has ordered 11 new buses since 2021, as part of efforts to modernise the Isle of Man's public transport fleet and reduce maintenance costs.

In a written response to a Tynwald question from Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh, Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood says five Mercedes Citaro Hybrid buses were ordered in late 2023 and delivered in December 2024 at a cost of £934,000.

A further six Wrights StreetDeck buses were ordered in late 2024, with delivery expected in October 2025.

The purchase cost for those vehicles is £1,437,000.

Dr Haywood said replacing vehicles at the right time allows for a better return on investment and helps lower the fleet’s carbon footprint.

While none of the Department’s buses have been sold through the second-hand market in the past five years, plans are now in progress to sell up to four older Mercedes vehicles.

A decision on whether additional buses will be sold will be made closer to the arrival of the new StreetDeck fleet, based on capacity and service needs.
