More than 240 applications received in past year

The Isle of Man Government says apprenticeships remain a vital route into skilled work for young people and a key support for local industry.

It follows recent changes to the scheme aimed at strengthening support for small businesses and ensuring fairness across all trades.

But concerns have been raised on Manx Radio this week about the availability of apprentice opportunities for young people.

In a statement, a government spokesperson says that in April 2024, the apprenticeship scheme was updated after a full review by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture.

Changes included a 50 percent increase in incentives for employers with fewer than 10 staff and equal support across all trades.

Government says training and assessment remain fully funded for eligible apprentices, regardless of business size.

The statement also highlights that over 240 applications have been received in the past year, with 35 new employers joining the scheme.

It concludes by saying government remains open to continued dialogue with the construction sector to ensure the scheme remains fit for purpose in a changing labour market.
