The Island’s prison has set up a new venture to improve its 'green' credentials and promote awareness of environmental issues among inmates.
A greening committee has brought together different departments within the prison to find ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the Jurby complex and reduce its running costs.
So far a recycling scheme has led to fall in waste management costs and food bills have been cut too, thanks to an annual production of nearly two tonnes of vegetables in the prison poly tunnels.
Prisoners are also helping to produce reusable shopping bags and local charities have benefited from recycling initiatives.
More than 50 old mattresses and old sheets and towels have been given to the MSPCA to create bedding for animals.
The prison says building stronger links with the local community is generating positive results.
