A snapshot of life inside Jurby prison was revealed during an inquest today.
Prisoners past and present gave evidence at a hearing into the death of inmate Michael Davidson who overdosed on drugs in March 2012.
The jury of seven heard of drug use, makeshift cigarettes and the brewing of illicit hooch, specifically on the men’s wing.
Serving inmates were told they did not have to answer any questions that could incriminate them – and many took this advice.
Coroner of Inquests John Needham heard Mr Davidson appeared to be high when he arrived at prison.
Former prisoner Sean O’Dea said cannabis, heroin, and other illegal drugs were readily available on the wing, but he refused to say where they’d come from.
Mr O’Dea also denied prisoners gave new inmates a ‘Jurby Welcome Pack’– a selection of illegal drugs for newcomers.
And serving prisoner Ben Clark also dismissed the suggestion, telling the court ‘drugs aren’t free in prison, mate’.
