Inquest opens following death at prison

An inquest has opened into the death of a man who died at the Isle of Man Prison.

Taylor Jake Murphy died while being held on remand.

The 20-year-old's regular address was given as being in Douglas. 

Coroner of Inquests James Brooks said Mr Murphy was found in his cell early on the morning of Friday 18 September.

He recorded a cause of death of asphyxia and confirmed CCTV footage showed no one else had been in Mr Murphy's cell since he was locked in the night before. 

Mr Brooks extended his condolences to Mr Murphy's mother and adjourned the inquest to a date to be determined. 

As Mr Murphy's death occurred while in custody, the full inquest will be heard by a jury and Deemster. 

Mr Murphy had been accused of wounding another person with intent to cause murder.

He had denied that charge and was awaiting trial which was due to take place in May next year.
