Commissioners look to extend village boundary
Port Erin Commissioners have moved a step closer to extending the village boundary around the entire Ballakilley Estate, at the expense of neighbouring Rushen parish.
A public inquiry, chaired by Geoff Karran MBE, has recommended the Department of Infrastructure approve the extension.
It comes despite more than 70% of respondents to a consultation on the issue objecting to Port Erin's plans.
The proposal will now be brought before Tynwald this July for members consideration.
Ratepayers in the 78 properties on the Rushen side of the estate's boundary will face a 'transitional' increase in rates over the next decade if Port Erin's bid is successful.
Rushen residents currently pay a rate of 100p in the pound, whereas Port Erin residents pay 307 pence in the pound.
If approved, the handover is scheduled to take place in April 2020.
