
One thousand children have begun a day of friendly competition in 13 different sports at the Island's biggest annual sporting event for young people, the HSBC Manx Youth Games.
The outdoor opening ceremony for the 12th Games at the National Sports Centre went ahead despite early fears it would be a wash-out due to forecast heavy rain.
The rain arrived after the march-in by the children in front of a packed grandstand and they're now putting several months' training in their chosen sport to the test in tournaments, games and races.
Leisure minister Graham Cregeen says the event is unique and much-admired elsewhere, while opening ceremony host Manx Radio's Sports Editor Tim Glover says some of the youngsters will go on to bigger things:
