Inquiry to determine when mud build-up was first known and what action was taken
An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the grounding of the Manxman ferry at Douglas Harbour earlier this month.
Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood confirmed that the Director of Harbours has commissioned a formal inquiry into how and when high levels of mud - blamed for the grounding on 1 March - were first identified, who was aware, and what action was taken.
While the investigation is ongoing, the Department of Infrastructure says it has already taken steps to address the issue.
A specialist dredging firm, Boskalis, was brought in to carry out regrading work across the harbour using the plough dredge vessel Norma II.
Although the main harbour area and general berths were successfully treated, the vessel was unable to reach close to the fenders at berth 5, where a shallow patch remains.
Boskalis is now developing a solution for that section.
Once additional work is complete, the Harbours Division plans to tender for a five-year harbour survey programme, including regular monitoring at Douglas.
